Today, partying students looking to rehydrate during Bristol Freshers  Fortnight had their thirst quenched – while receiving a lesson about the University of Bristol’s cruelty to animals – when our giant “rat” handed out free rodent-themed water bottles during the student union’s “How to Make Change” event.

Rats Are Forced to Tread Water, Not Sip It

In the widely discredited forced swim experiments carried out at the University of Bristol, experimenters put rats, who may or may not have been dosed with a test substance, into inescapable beakers of water and watch them as they desperately paw at the sides of the beaker and swim in search of an escape, on the assumption that this can tell us something about mental health conditions in humans.

Once they have finished with them, the experimenters kill the animals – by gassing, blunt force trauma to the head, an overdose of anaesthetic, or breaking their necks – and study their brains.

These Bottles Carry Water and the Truth

Each of the free bottles of water handed out by PETA shows new University of Bristol students the truth about the archaic, useless, and cruel forced swim test.

The forced swim test does nothing more than terrify animals and delay the development of effective new treatments for human ailments, which are desperately needed.

Be Part of the University of Bristol’s Change for Rats

We’re calling on the university to make a change, commit to banning the torment of helpless rats in these experiments, and adopt modern, animal-free research methods. Join us:

Aspiring University of Bristol students should know that out of public view, rodents are being tormented in cruel and worthless forced swim experiments. Join us in future protests to help make an impact for animals:
